Strategies for Success
SAT Prep Course
Strategies for Success has grown from tutoring individual students at my kitchen table to the largest seminar-style SAT preparation course in the state of South Carolina.  Over the years, many people have asked how it all began.

In 1986, I received a call from a parent asking me to prepare his son for the SAT.  I explained that although I had done very well on the test, I wasn’t really an expert on the subject.  However, he finally convinced me to take on the project because they had tried everything else to no avail.

Preparing to work with his son, I bought some of the most highly regarded books on the market dealing with the SAT.  I quickly realized that many of the strategies presented in these materials were ineffective, and I knew that there had to be better ways to attack the problems.  I became absorbed in this pursuit and gradually began to uncover some of the secrets to success on the SA.  As I learned the strategies, I taught them to my new pupil.

He took the exam and improved his score 160 points.  The rest, as they say, is history.  His mother told everyone she knew how much I had helped her son, and soon I was teaching five or six students around my kitchen table in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.  After these students experienced similar success, the class grew exponentially in Charleston.  Soon I was getting inquiries from all over the Carolinas, but our first major expansion came in 1994 when I was persuaded to offer our services in Columbia, SC, after getting calls from parents who had heard success stories from friends in Charleston. I regularly made the tow-hour one-way drive for two years until 1996 when I was chosen to instruct SAT strategies at US’s Carolina Camp-In.  Erik Norton was in the masters program there and was assigned to help me for the duration of the camp.  I was extremely impressed with him, and after he expressed interest in getting involved in the program, I began training him to teach the course in Columbia.  We worked together for a little over a year before he taught it on his own.  Erik has been very successful in proving that others can replicate my results with the proper training.

We have gradually added instructors since that time, investing an enormous amount of time and energy in the training of every instructor.  Slow, quality-controlled growth has been at the heart of our expansion curriculum.  In Charleston, Columbia, and now throughout the U.S., our program has helped improve SAT scores since 1986.  Our success is a direct result of the recommendations and referrals of others.  Our corporate philosophy is truly the golden rule.  We want every student to be as successful as he or she wants to be, because when people are genuinely satisfied with our service they are happy to tell their friends.
